Industrial Engineering Senior Projects Compete at Project Fair


The Industrial Engineering Project Fair and Competition took place on Friday, May 18, in the Mithat Çoruh Auditorium. The fourth year students in IE are required to develop an implementable project in cooperation with corporate sponsors. These projects introduce students to the issues faced by the Turkish Industrial sector.

Nine project groups presented their projects in detail to the participants. The senior IE students also introduced their projects at information stands along with posters they had prepared.(continues)

The Department of Communication and Design Hosted Art Lovers


On Friday, May 18, guests were welcomed to an exhibition in FFB-08. This one-day event was organized by the Department of Communication and Design. Since it is almost the end of this academic year, the department exhibited significant works created in different courses by students. The exhibition included short films, animations, two and three dimensional design projects, photographs, and installations. A large group of guests had the opportunity to see various kinds of artwork, while the exhibition provided guests with the chance to meet students and instructors from the Department of Communication and Design.

Construction on Campus Underway


Several new buildings are currently under construction or are slated to begin construction soon at Bilkent University. The new Nanotehcnology Research Center, located next to the Faculty of Science on Main campus, is scheduled to be completed this July. At 7,828 m2, the building will have 47 laboratories, 35 offices and a conference hall for 126 people and a foyer. Also on Main campus, between the Faculty of Business Administration and the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, The Amphitheaters Block consisting of four 168-person amphitheatres and 18 offices for a total of 2,028 m2, is scheduled to be finished in early September. Also scheduled to be finished before the start of the next academic year is new faculty housing being built next to Faculty Housing 101-105. The building will have 78 new rooms, each at 35 m2 as well as technical service rooms for a total of 5,446 m2. The housing is due to be completed in mid-August.

Two buildings are scheduled to be completed next year. A new Electrical and Electronics Engineering building will be built on Main campus next to the Dean of Students Offices and is scheduled to be finished in May 2008. The building will be 9,946 m2 and will be home to three amphitheaters, with a 72 person capacity, a conference hall with seating for 192 people, a foyer, nine laboratories, 10 research areas and offices, two meeting rooms and two seminar rooms. Finally, the new Bilkent University Preparatory School (BUPS) building with 18 classrooms, a library, music room, art room, administrative offices and a multipurpose room for 300 people will be built next to Student Dorm 91 on East campus. The 4,600 m2 BUPS will be finished in early June of 2008.

Distinguished Teachers Honored


The University is pleased to announce the recipients of the Distinguished Teachers of the Year Award for 2007. Asst. Prof. Aslıhan Altay Salih and Assoc. Prof. Ali Sinan Sertöz were chosen based on the comments of Bilkent students, alumni and colleagues for demonstrating outstanding teaching abilities, and for contributing to students’ academic and intellectual development. The Bilkent News asked this year's "Distinguished Teachers" for their thoughts on receiving this award.

2007 SATM and VSTHS Awards Ceremony


On May 9, the School of Applied Technology and Management and the Vocational School of Tourism and Hotel Services jointly organized their 14th Awards Ceremony, at the Bilkent Hotel and Conference Center.

A tradition now, the aim of the Awards Ceremony is to honor and celebrate the most successful students of the Tourism and Hotel Management, Business Information Management, Computer Technology and Information Systems, and Tourism and Hotel Services Departments. Just before their graduation, students with outstanding academic success, achievement in industrial training, creativity, leadership and social skills are awarded. In this, the departments receive the support of leading companies in their related industry, who also sponsor the plaques and gifts presented to award-winning students. The Awards Ceremony is also an ideal medium to once again bring our students, academics and industry representatives together and enhance ongoing cooperation. Among the sponsoring organizations are: Sybase, Undano, Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, HiltonSA Ankara, Swissotel, SKAL International Ankara, TÜRSAB and TÜROFED.
