“The Trojan Women” on
Stage |
The
senior students in the department of Performing Arts at the Faculty of Music and
Performing Arts are staging the play "The Trojan Women" (Troyalı Kadınlar) on Thursday
May 31 and Friday, June 1 at the
Bilkent Theater Hall.
A tragedy by the Greek playwright Euripides, "The Trojan Women" is considered a
commentary on the capture of the Aegean island of Melos by the Athenians in the same year
that the play was first produced, 415 BC.
The play begins with the gods, Athena and Poseidon, discussing ways to punish the Greek
armies because the armies condoned the rape of Cassandra by Ajax the Lesser in Athena's
temple. What follows is the story of the fates of the women of Troy after their city has
been sacked and their husbands have been killed.
