Letter to the Editor... Letter to the Editor...

Dear Editor,
Everybody knows that Bilkent has a great library with all kinds of books, a wireless Internet connection and study areas. However, whenever
I go to the library to study on my own (the reason being to find a quiet place to study), I am distracted by people talking, the occasional chatter of the library staff and even the computer noises like mouse clicks.

When this happens, I find it difficult to concentrate and study and so ask people to keep quiet around me. However, when they are warned they just seem to get annoyed and nothing changes. But where are the rights for the people who just want a silent place in the library for individual study? My suggestion is that there should be some floors or areas in which students are allowed to talk and study as groups. On the other hand, there should be some specific areas or floors for people who want to study on their own and not find themselves distracted by other people, i.e., silent study areas where no talking is allowed.

I am sure that many students would be pleased with separate areas because I see that there are always groups of students and individuals studying. Such an arrangement wouldn't hurt anybody and may actually make studying more efficient and successful by defining space for individuals to study without being disturbed as well as space for groups to study without worrying about disturbing others.
Thank you,

Ahmet Karaošlan
(IE/IV)

Response to the Letter:

Dear Ahmet Karaošlan,
I'm sorry to hear that you find that the library is not always quiet enough for the concentrated studying conditions you require. However, I'm glad that you called this problem to our attention. I appreciate your desire to offer suggestions and ask for improvements. Library environments are changing with the advent of technology and more assignments for group study work. We want to offer the best possible study conditions for all students based on their particular needs. Be assured that we will seriously review your comments and suggestions and provide you with a response as to how we may be able to accommodate your desire for specific quiet areas for working in the library.

Barbara von Wahlde
Interim Library Director
