Letter to the Editor...Letter to the Editor...

Dear Editor,

We all know that it is forbidden to smoke within buildings on campus. Recently, however, I have observed people smoking on the staircase of the Engineering Building B-Block and just inside of the entrance of the T Building. This is what I cannot understand. If smoking is banned within buildings, why is this ban not enforced? I'd like to request that this problem be solved as I do not wish to breathe cigarette smoke any more.

Kindest regards,
Fahri Erdem Kaşak
(LAW/IV)

Response to the Letter:

Dear Fahri Erdem Kaşak,

Thank you very much for your letter. Your frustrations are understandable. As you know, Bilkent is a very large university. It is impossible for authority figures to be everywhere, all of the time. Whenever possible, Bilkent University staff will enforce all rules, including the smoking bans. However, some help on the part of students is needed.

We ask everyone in the Bilkent Community to follow the rules. They have been set for a reason. In this case, it is a matter of health, safety, and respect for fellow students. If you see a problem persisting in a particular area, let security personnel in the building know. It is best not to start a confrontation over the matter, especially if you are already in a state of frustration. Finally, if you are a friend of someone who does break the rules, try to set a good example or help by spreading the word that rules are rules, and there will be consequences for breaking them.

It is important for students and staff to work together and continue to maintain Bilkent University's famous warm, friendly and safe atmosphere.

Prof. Kürşat Aydoğan
Vice Rector for Administrative and Financial Affairs
