The Library is pleased to announce that on Thursday, March 27, Prof. Tayfun Özçelik of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Bilkent, will deliver the second Library Lunchtime Lecture, entitled "Walking On All Fours: Evolution and Human Disease." The talk will examine the role of DNA in the development of diseases, and will focus especially on Prof. Özçelik's groundbreaking research on quadrupedal gait in humans, otherwise known as Unertan Syndrome, which was recently discovered in Turkey. As reported in Bilkent News two weeks ago (Vol. 14, No. 19) Prof. Özçelik and his team were the first to identify a genetic mutation that causes this condition. The results of their work were published this month in the prestigious journal "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA" (PNAS). If you are interested in learning more about how genetic mutations can cause disease, or about Unertan Syndrome in particular, make your way to the Art Gallery at the Main Campus Library, Thursday from 12:40 to 1:30 p.m. The lecture will be in English, and refreshments will be supplied.
