If
you happened to be walking around campus last week, you probably noticed an odd sight in
the alley beside the sports center- a group of students working with a pile of bricks. If
you weren't on campus that day, I'm here to tell you that last week, a group of students
were working with a pile of bricks next to the sports center. Still confused? So was I,
until I spoke with Gaye Çulcuoğlu, Acting Chair for the Department of Landscape
Architecture and Urban Design. She explained to me that this was actually an activity
sponsored by the Işıklar Klinkler Bricks Group to familiarize the students with using
bricks as a design material. Not only that, but there was a contest involved.
Earlier in the day, the Işıklar Klinkler Bricks Group came to our campus from İstanbul
with a truck full of bricks, and surprisingly comfortable couches. Students from the
Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design were treated to a presentation on
the technical details of the different kinds of bricks. After that, the student's were
given bricks, asked to get into groups, and instructed to create 3 dimensional designs
with them. Competition was definitely in the air. Of course this led to some drama: one
group's design toppled over half way through, and a few people were accused of stealing
bricks. In the end, one design was selected as the winner by a jury.
The winning group will go to Bartın to see the Işıklar Klinkler Bricks
Group factory. This event will be repeated on other campuses in Turkey. A winner will be
selected from first place designs of each competition to go outside of the country on an
educational trip, sponsored by the Işıklar Klinkler Bricks Group. Good luck to the
Bilkent team in the finals!
