Erzurum Köşesi: On-Air with Bach by İdil Biret
Tonight on TRT-2

The fourth episode of Erzurum Köşesi, a program featuring science and music at the Bilkent high school in Erzurum, will be broadcast tonight on TRT-2. The program has so far hosted, Beethoven's 3rd piano concerto by the BSO, Biret and Tabakov, Stravinsky's Firebird Suite 1919 by the Turkish Greek Youth Orchestra conducted by Ashkenazy and Prof. Ekmel Özbay's presentation "Invisibility Cloak".

This TV show does not just present the concert or lecture. Students from the Bilkent Erzurum High School get together with the artists or scientists for Q&A sessions. Works of music that are to be performed or topics of science presented are explored in length thus giving the TV audience more insight. The audience is also welcome to participate with questions and comments via the program's e-mail address erzurum@bilkent.edu.tr

Tonight's program will feature a BSO concert recorded live at the Erzurum Concert Hall. J.S. Bach's keyboard concerto in D minor will be performed by İdil Biret. BSO's new Music Director Klaus Weise will be conducting the orchestra.
Erzurum students will get together with Ms. Biret to explore the concerto. Highlights of the discussion will include issues such as the makings of a concerto, whether this one is originally composed by Bach or not, and music appreciation in general.

Joining the discussion from New York through the NY on Air offices of Bilkent University will be Dr. Walter Frisch, Gumm/Von Tilzer Professor of Music at the Department of Music, Columbia University. Dr. Frisch has been giving videoconference lectures on music appreciation to students in Erzurum. Erzurum Köşesi will present footage from these and other videoconferences throughout the season.

As an added bonus, the concert will end with Ms. Biret's surprise encore by Bach. The encore is a work by the master composer that is rarely performed on a piano. Audiences are more familiar with a later version of the work for solo violin.

Bilkent Business School Becomes CFA Program Partner

Bilkent University's Faculty of Business Administration has become a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program Partner. The CFA Institute is a global, not-for-profit association for investment professionals. It awards the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) designation, administers CFA curriculum and exam programs worldwide, publishes research, conducts professional development programs, and sets voluntary, ethics-based professional and performance-reporting standards for the investment industry.

This partnership aligns three programs of the business school with the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge ® syllabus: Undergraduate, MS in Finance and MBA programs. The partnership agreement was signed on January 28 by Dean Erdal Erel and Dennis McLeavey, the Head of Education of the CFA Institute. The chairman of the Capital Markets Board, Dr Turan Erol, delivered an opening speech stating the crucial role and importance of these partnerships and designations in the finance industry. McLeavey stated that through the partnership they are able to bring the CFA Program to more students and hopefully increase the number of qualified investment professionals working in the region, while Vice Rector Kürşat Aydoğan emphasized the importance of external evaluation and accreditation of the departments. Dean Erel announced that five student scholarships will be awarded annually to cover program enrollment fees and a large portion of exam registration fees.
