April 1 is generally known as "April Fools Day." This year, however, there was no fooling around. The day marked the start of a new campaign in İstanbul, İzmir, Muğla, Ankara and at Bilkent University focused on raising awareness for the need of a fair environment for everyone in the community. There are 8.5 million registered handicapped persons in Turkey, and 20 million supporting families. Too often, they, and the challenges they face, are ignored or forgotten.
Bilkent's awareness campaign revolved around a wheel chair, featuring slogans like: "This is not a joke!, Who wants to sit here?, We know that none of you would like to think of yourselves sitting in this chair! Did you know that, in Turkey, 8.5 million handicapped would like to do that but they can't."
