Just Like Mom Said, Firsts are Memorable…
From childhood we are often told that when we do something for the first time, it will be memorable and special until the end of our lives. This may be because those first experiences happen without pre-judgment or bias. I am sure most will remember their first boy or girlfriend, first kiss, first failed exam, or the first time they drove. The essential beauty is hidden; firsts never end. This short article is memorable for me, because I am writing for Bilkent News for the first time, and the subject will be about my recent "first" experience.
As a senior year student, I have been so burned out by courses, exams and everything else related to getting an education, and was looking for something fun to do. Luckily enough, I received an e-mail asking for volunteers to work at the Bilkent Library Art Gallery. After a long interview I became an intern at the gallery.
Before working there, each time I visited an exhibition I just looked at the paintings. Now, I know what is going on behind the scenes. I see the long preparation process behind the works and have more respect for the people and their contributions. Thanks to our gallery manager, Atilla Güllü, interns have a chance to see the world in a unique way, and follow a path for self development in the field of art.
My memorable first at the gallery was the exhibition opening held on April 9 for a show titled Kağıda Kadınca Dokunuşlar II/“Womanly Touches on Paper II,” featuring only paintings done by women. This exhibition provides an opportunity to take a little trip into the inner world of these artists. Six painters and 66 paintings make up the exhibition.
Guests are always welcome to come to the Bilkent Library Art Gallery, Monday to Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m! The current exhibition will continue until April 30.
