Terrorist Attempt on Main Campus
On Wednesday, April 29, 2009, an effort was made to carry out a terrorist attack against Prof. Hikmet Sami Türk, a former Minister of Justice, a prominent member of the Faculty of Law at Bilkent, and an expert in constitutional law. Prof. Hikmet Sami Türk was about to enter his constitutional law class in B- Building, room
B-113, at 10:45 a.m. to give a lecture when a woman, identified as Didem Akman, approached him and ignited the fuse of a bomb she was carrying on her body. The bomb, however, did not explode. This attempt was foiled by the capable intervention of the security staff, and consequently no harm was rendered to any member of the Bilkent community. Prof. Sami Türk said, "She pretended to ask a question, I told her to come after class. Just as I entered the class I heard an explosion behind me. She managed to activate a detonator or two, but the main explosive did not go off." The whole building was evacuated following the incident. Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day, but resumed on Thursday, April 30.
As a result of the event, the University's security staff will be implementing additional security measures, and therefore, the cooperation of the Bilkent community will be greatly appreciated.
