VJs and DJs: An Exciting Multi Sensory Experience
Live VJs (Video Jockeys) add a new dimension to a DJs (Disc Jockeys) performance by synchronizing video images with the music being created. They spontaneously develop projected images that fit with the rhythm of the songs being played, changing the visuals according to the beats.
To find out more about this combination of audio and visuals, I spoke to Hakan Erdog, member of DASDAT (Digital Ankara Space, Digital Ankara Time), a group formed in 2004 with Andreas Treske and Murat Karamüftüoğlu. Previously, they were involved in making music videos in general. Now they are more interested in this live VJ concept. At the recent COMD 10th anniversary party, they officially started doing this type of live performance. They took it one step further by joining forces with DJ Yahel, the world's 28th Best DJ, with a performance at Saklıkent on October 25.
I was curious as to their future plans. "We do not have a very specific goal in this but we are always trying to construct a concept that takes us on a new route. Style is very important and this is true for nearly every thing. The idea is not just to show image after image, but rather to show images that have a meaning."
I asked how the live performance with DJ Yahel went and he answered that it was very entertaining, but, "the conditions were a bit hard because we did not have good equipment and we certainly have no financial aid. Also we were there performing for 8 hours non-stop and it was very tiring." Overall, however, he felt that "the DJs performances were very good. Gark (a Turkish DJ) also performed that night, and it was very enjoyable to make videos for them. It was a very nice experience for us."
He told me that they received an invitation for another performance at Saklıkent for a group called Black and White. Although they are still considering the invitation, he hinted that they would really like to go there to perform. As he said, "When you get the taste of it once, you can't give it up."
Until next time, I fare you well...
