Bilkent University Library has recently launched a new initiative called the Plagiarism Prevention Project. Plagiarism means the use of "another person's words, ideas, invention, etc., without appropriate reference, and claim[ing] it as your own work." There are many reasons why students (and instructors) might plagiarize, ranging from lack of knowledge about citing sources to problems of time management. One of the responsibilities of the Library is to inform users about library resources and services in order to build information literacy skills, and reduce plagiarism by removing the reasons for plagiarism. During the spring semester, Bilkent Library will be working closely with instructors and students to find out more about plagiarism at Bilkent and work out strategies to deal with it.
Secondly, as usual the library is pleased to announce that the Library Lunchtime Lecture series will continue this semester. The first lecture will be delivered on February 24th by one of Turkey's most important and influential scholars, Prof. Halil İnalcık, from the History Department. The second speaker will be Dr. Lale Demirtürk (AMER) who will talk on March 24th about her research on the African-American novel. And the final lecture of this semester will be given on April 21 by Prof. Sinan Sertöz from the Mathematics Department.
Please mark your calendars with these dates, and check Bilkent News nearer to the time of the lectures.
Lastly, as a reminder, in order to prevent damage to library materials, please remember that -- except for bottled water -- all food and drink should not be taken into the Library. You can consume your drinks inside the cafe or take them outside the library building.
