Board of Trustees Meets on February 2

The Bilkent University Board of Trustees met on February 2, 2010 with Acting Chairman Ergün Toğrol, Gülsev Kale, Ahmet Nalbur, Şencan Özme, Hüsnü Özyeğin, Muhsin Saraçlar, Ergül Tunçbilek, Boğaç Üner and Rector Ali Doğramacı all present.

The Board discussed a number of proposals that had been put forth by the University Senate, reviewing and approving the Senate's ideas on making some changes to BUSEL regulations, Internal Transfer Procedures, and the Institute of Economics and Social Sciences.

The board approved a proposal for a new Master of Arts program at the Institute of Economic and Social Sciences, Master of International Affairs and Public Policy (MIAPP). The program will provide students with an interdisciplinary curriculum on international relations focusing on the policy world.

Another two proposals concerned the founding of the University Industry Collaboration Center (USİM) at the Bilkent University Faculty of Industrial Engineering, and a new Institute of Educational Sciences in Erbil.

The board also addressed the matter of building scientific research centers at Bilkent. The National Advanced Engineering Systems Research Center (NAESRC) (UİMSAM) will support research to develop knowledge and technologies that address the problems that Turkey, as well as the world face. Some of these are Design and Manufacture of Microsystems, Biomedical Imaging Technologies, Space and Defense Technologies, Biotechnology and Genetics, and Advanced Surface Science and Technologies. The Acoustics and Underwater Technologies Research Center conducts research and development on underwater acoustics.

The research carried out at Bilkent’s well-known Institute of Materials Science and Nanotechnology was reviewed by the board. The board decided to officially designate the associated center as a National Nanotechnology Research Center.

After approving these proposals, the Board of Trustees reviewed the 2009 fiscal year budget and approved it. The board set the tuition fees for the upcoming 2010-2011 academic year as follows:
Students to be admitted in 2010:
17,900 TL (8% VAT included)
International Students to be admitted in 2010: $13,700 (8% VAT included)
Students admitted in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009: 17,900 TL
(8% VAT included)
Students admitted in 2004:
$10,170 (8%VAT included)
Students admitted in 2001, 2002 and 2003: $8,680 (8%VAT included)
International Students admitted in 2009: $13,650 (8% VAT included)     
International Students admitted in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008: $13,315
(8% VAT included)
International Students admitted in 2002, 2003 and 2004: $10,750
(8% VAT included)

The board also deliberated on the implications of Rector Ali Doğramacı’s letter of November 2009 regarding his decision to leave office by the end of June 2010, and addressed issues of the search process for a new rector.

Assoc. Prof. Yalçın Wins Masatoshi Gündüz Ikeda Research Award

Ergün YalçınAssoc. Prof. Ergün Yalçın of the Department of Mathematics received the 2009 Masatoshi Gündüz Ikeda Science Award for his work on “Group Actions, Group Extensions, and Generalized Burnside Rings.” The award also recognizes his contributions to the field of mathematics.

The Masatoshi Gündüz Ikeda Research Award was founded in 2002 in memory of Prof. Dr. Masatoshi Gündüz Ikeda for his global contributions to Turkish Mathematics. The award is given once a year to scientists who have made noteworthy contributions to mathematics.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ergün Yalçın will deliver a talk on the "Symmetries of Products of Spheres"at the reward ceremony, which is taking place on Thursday, February 25, at METU, in the Department of Mathematics, 3:30 p.m.

University Industry Collaboration Center Opens

University Industry Collaboration Center Opens

The Bilkent University Industrial Engineering "University - Industry Collaboration Center" (UICC) was inaugurated on February 4, 2010. The ceremony took place at the Cyberpark main conference hall. Nihat Ergün, Minister of Industry and Commerce, and Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Doğramacı attended the ceremony. Representatives from industry, Nurettin Özdebir, Chairman of Ankara Chamber of Industry, Bilkent IE faculty members and students were also present.

UICC offices are located in Cyberpark Block B. UICC aims to improve the collaboration between Bilkent University and industry by conducting high level research and development projects with selected companies and increase its involvement with Bilkent faculty members and students. University Industry Collaboration Center Opens

As stated by Prof. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu, director of center, the mission of USİM includes preparing students for post-graduate life by creating an “applied education environment;” creating “common solution platforms” where problems are discussed; solution-sharing; and creating “university- industry cooperation environments” where faculty members and researches can use their experiences to improve the development of R&D.
