burak şahinThe Veils

All of us know The Veils from the song that “Lavinia” but they are more than that.

The Veils are an alternative and indie rock band with members from New Zealand, Germany and the United Kingdom, fronted by songwriter-singer Finn Andrews.

The band has been through numerous line-up changes since its inception. Finn Andrews survived band member defections after their first studio album, The Runaway Found, which includes the single Lavinia (2004). This marvelous song's success helped them to record their second studio album, Nux Vomica in 2006. Finally, the Veils released their third studio album on April, 2009, called Sun Gangs, said to be one of the best albums of 2009. This time around, it is a break-up album that listeners find Finn Andrews' reflections about relationships and separations. The Letter and Sit Down By the Fire are the most impressive songs from Sun Gangs.

veils“It throbs with delicious melodrama,” said NME about the album. And Turkish people now have a chance to watch The Veils live. They will be performing live at Babylon/İstanbul on 28th of February. It is strongly recommended that alternative rock lovers go and listen to them live.

Before introducing the albums in this column, I would like to share the best albums of 2009 in the rock/indie/folk/pop genres.
1) The Veils - Sun Gangs
2) Kasabian - West Ryder / Pauper / Lunatic Asylum
3) Doves - Kingdom Rust
4) The Cribs - Ignore the Ignorant
5) The Big Pink - A Brief History of Love
6) Pearl Jam - Backspacer
7) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Blitz
8) Muse - The Resistance
9) The XX - XX
10) Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest

Of course, European legends are rather well-documented, and it is impossible to mention all of them here, so here's hoping that at least some myths mentioned have interested you enough to read about them.
