İstanbul deputy and Vice-President of the CHP (Republican People's Party) parliamentary group Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu visited Bilkent University on Wednesday, March 24 to discuss judicial independence and the democratization process in Turkey. The conference was organized by the Genç Hukukçular Kulübü. Kılıçdaroğlu shared concerns and solutions regarding the problems of the current legal system in Turkey, predicting possible negative results of the new constitutional amendments proposed by the AKP (Justice Development Party).
Kılıçdaroğlu emphasized that a positive change is only possible with a stronger judiciary, and it is the duty of all people who believe in justice, especially young lawyers who are new in the profession.
The state consists of three units: legislative, executive and judiciary. These units have the right to put some restrictions on the use of force of another unit within the laws, but according to Kılıçdaroğlu, that is not the status quo.
"What the executive unit does today is not just put some restrictions on the judiciary, but to take it under control by changing its structure for the executive branch's benefit," Kılıçdaroğlu said.
On the proposed articles about structural alterations for the AYM (Supreme Court) and HSYK (Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors), Kılıçdaroğlu said , "According to the new AYM structure, only members are obliged to be lawyers, and the president may appoint anyone who completed higher education to the AYM."
Kılıçdaroğlu concluded his talk with some advice to all young people: "Only your commitment will correct this situation, so never lose your faith in justice.
