Pardus Days Held at Bilkent

PardusOpen Source and Pardus enthusiasts in Ankara   gathered  on March 23-24  for the second traditional Pardus Promotion and Developers' Day  by the Bilkent IEEE Computer Society, with the support of TBD Genç Ankara, TÜBİTAK/UEKAE Pardus Team and Özgürlükİçin.

Pardus, our national operating system initiated by TÜBİTAK, is named after the extinct Anatolian Leopard (lat. Panthera pardus tulliana). Celebrating its fifth birthday this year, Pardus was developed by both official and volunteer developers in order to reduce the large amount of capital investment spent for commercial operating systems in schools, and government offices, as well as the private sector.

The event consisted of a total of eight sessions, four in each day, and attracted 300 students from 15 different universities, state institutions, and software industry  employees. Sessions about open source and free software philosophy were hosted on the first day with the participation of  Prof. Altay Güvenir, Chair of the  Department of Computer Engineering, Linux Users Association (LKD) President Doruk Fişek, LKD Honorary President Assoc. Prof. Mustafa Akgül from the Department of Computer Technology and Information Systems, Uğur Ayfer, Assistant Director of the Computer Center and TOBB ETÜ Institute Member Talha Yalta. Later that day, official Pardus developers Gökçen Eraslan and Bahadır Kandemir explained how and why  someone can become a Pardus developer. Pardus was also compared to other operating systems.

In the second day of the event, Meltem Parmaksız, Metin Akdere and Mete Bilgin, CS seniors from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, told their story about developing Pardus' 64-bit architecture version as their senior project. In the last session, Semen Cirit, Ali Işıngör and Gizem Belen, Pardus developers and supporters, explained software tests, user and community development through Pardus.
