Marc Semo, foreign news editor of the French Libération newspaper, was at Bilkent on the 5th of November. Semo, who has covered Eastern Europe and the Balkans for many years, is widely accepted in France as an expert on Turkey with his 20 years of experience. During his lecture in French, the author of the recently published La révolution du Bosphore gave a fine account of the social, political and economic changes that Turkey underwent in the past 20 years. Underlining Turkey's “European but not only European” character, Semo warned that Turkey might eventually have to chose between the Western and Eastern worlds. The lecture was followed by a lively Q&A session where several members of the audience asked questions about Turkey's EU bid. |
