CS Student Wins Irish Science Competition

Ezgi Çiçek

Ezgi Çiçek (CS/III), currently studying abroad at University of California, San Diego won the best overall project at the fourth Online Dublin Computer Science Summer School (ODCSSS). Çiçek has been accepted to the Dublin Computer Science Summer School program, a 12-week undergraduate research internship between the University College Dublin (UCD) and Dublin City University (DCU) Ireland.

Çiçek's project, which is supervised by Dr. Michael O' Mahony and Professor Barry Symth, won the “Best Overall Project" among 18 different projects from 10 countries. Çiçek's project, "The Social Life of Search,” investigated opportunities for collaboration in Web search.

“During the four years of ODCSSS, we have had 80 students through the programme,” said Dr. Aaron Quigley, director of ODCSSS. "Each year students and projects have improved markedly. This year there was a review panel consisting of an external industry representative and a representative from UCD. They were most impressed with Ezgi's project. It was a well explained piece of research, with a clear scientific approach to what was done."

Message from the Rector

Ali Doğramacı

Dear Members of Bilkent University,

After considerable deliberation I have reached the decision that the present academic year, ending on June 30th, 2010, will be my final term as rector of Bilkent University. It took me some time to convince the founder and president of Bilkent University, Professor İhsan Doğramacı that this is the right decision. Last week he agreed. I then informed the members of the Senate, the Administrative Council, and the Board of Trustees of the University.

The law governing universities in Turkey limits rector appointments to those who have not reached the age of 67. In two months I will be 65 years old.  More important than a few more years of service as rector is the question of where Bilkent will be in the 2020’s.  Whether or not I remain rector for a few more years, the answer to that question of Bilkent's long-term future will be determined by the university administration after me. I very much wish our founder İhsan Doğramacı to be involved in choosing the team after me.  Hence my decision stated above.

Other than a few exceptions such as my current action, most of the decisions taken at the rectorate of Bilkent are the result of a collective process that draws on the input of diverse members of the Bilkent community. I am grateful to each one of you for being a part of this process over the years. During the quarter century since the founding of the university, we have come a long way. The successes of Bilkent today are recognized across the globe. This remarkable accomplishment is the result of the contributions of all those who in one way or another have provided support to this university on its journey since it started back in 1984. This is your success story.  It has been a privilege and an honor for me to work with you along the way. With your support, the new administration will carry Bilkent to ever higher levels of accomplishment.  With these thoughts I thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

Ali Doğramacı
