Dündar: Media is Irresponsible
Can Dündar, a prominent Turkish newspaper and TV journalist, was invited by the School of Applied Languages to deliver a lecture December 1 titled Is the Turkish Press Fulfilling its Responsibilities These Days? The lecture was held in place of one of the journalism classes.

The popularity of the subject matter and lecturer drew a crowd that filled an entire classroom. In contrast to his own popularity, Dündar said journalists should keep a low profile, but blamed TV for turning many of them into celebrities. Dündar said 20 years ago journalism was a decent career, but after the September 12, 1980, coup, journalists were restricted, leading to a phase where serious news was replaced by sheer entertainment. Now that the media is able to do some self-critiquing, Dündar hopes that this irresponsible behavior will come to an end with a new generation of media people doing more responsible work.
