Celebration at Summit
|

On October 29, six members of Bilkent University Outdoor Sports Club went to Aladağlar-Niğde to climb Lahitkaya peak to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Turkish Republic. Lahitkaya (3100m) is placed on the southern part of Aladağlar with a 350 meters high north wall. Members of the team were Efecan Aytemiz, Tunç Fındık, Burak Galip Akkurt, Kerim Savran, Işıl Olgunsoy and Engin Kaya. On October 31 at about 6:30 a.m., four members of our group; Engin, Kerim, Işıl and me (Burak) left the base camp placed in Vali Konaği, Sulağan Keler to climb Lahitkaya. The other two members of the group Tunç Fındık and Efecan Aytemiz left the camp to climb the ice routes on the west face of Lahitkaya. Because of technical difficulties, our team divided into two. Since Işıl and Engin did not have enough experience with ice, it would be dangerous for them to continue, therefore Kerim and I continued climbing on the mix route (rock, snow and ice). At 12:02 p.m. we reached the summit. This activity was not only to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Turkish Republic but also the 10th anniversary of foundation of Bilkent University DOST club.
Our meetings are on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at T-173 just above Cafe Alle. Everybody interested in outdoor sports is welcome to join us.
