From the Rector
Dear students,

I welcome you all to the 1999-2000 academic year. This semester started with sorrow for all of us. One of the most tragic eartquakes of the century hit Marmara Region in mid-August and Bilkent suffered quite a few loses among the students, faculty and staff. I extend my sympathies to those who lost their beloved ones.

Bilkent sudents and staff were there helping the survivors immediately after the earthquake with the spirit of caring and sharing for those who are in need. our relief efforts and community service will contınue to the earthquake region at various sites till we are no longer needed there.

After the earthquake, questions concerning the damage in the buildings of the University were raised. An earthquake damage evaluation was performed on the buildings by professional engineers. There were no major damages on the buildings after the earthquake.

A new semester is ahead of you with new professors, returning friends, challenging assignments, and examinations. Bilkent University offers you unlimited knowledge and a welcoming environment that a student needs for a crative and fulfilling academic lilfe. I encourage you to push your limits to get the most out of your university and do your best.

I extend my best wishes to all Bilkent University members. Have a sucessful year.
