Foreign Ministry Honors Professor Halman
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, İsmail Cem, presented the Ministry's Distinguished Service Award to Bilkent Professor Talat Halman on Thursday, February 3, at Ankara Palas Devlet Konukevi. Prof. Halman received the award for his impressive contributions to Turkish art, culture, literature and poetry. Prof. Halman, who was the first Minister of Culture for the Republic of Turkey, has demonstrated many achievements as a scholar, literary figure, poet, and columnist.

In presenting the award, İsmail Cem said, "I take pleasure and pride, today, in conferring upon Professor Talat Halman the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Distinguished Service Award, which I hope will take a modest place among the several Turkish and international awards that have been presented to him." He described Halman as an extremely effective communicator and added that "Professor Halman shares his wisdom, knowledge, love and energy with us." Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit described Talat Halman as a great man of culture and said, "Bilkent University deserves our thanks for inviting Talat Halman to establish a Turkish Literature Department."

The award ceremony was followed by Prof. Talat Halman's presentation of a "Live Documentary" entitled "Turkish Arts Through the Ages."
