Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,

The Internet is the most important means of exchanging information in our era. Bilkent provides staff and students with a very good link to both Turkish and international servers, a fact greatly appreciated by all.

However, one thing puzzles me: students living in the university dormitories have rooms with sockets for the Local Area Network (LAN) connection, while teachers and teaching assistants living in university staff housing have to rely on the (often malfunctioning) Dial-Up connection.

It is not my intention to demand a LAN connection for staff housing. I would simply like to know if BCC has any plans to enable teachers and graduate students to benefit fully from the Bilkent Internet connection.
Sincerely,

Jakub Michalski (1st year Master of Fine Arts Student)

Seyit Koçberber, the director of BCC, provided the following response: Jakub Michalski's concern is definitely justified. The LAN connection cables for staff housing have not been installed yet. Since the various staff housing complexes on Main and East Campuses are quite a distance from each other and the cables need to be laid underground, the installation will involve considerable expense.

Currently, modems are used for connecting to the Internet. It is true that the long distance modems are inadequate. In the short term, we are planning to increase the capacity for long distance connections. Our long term goal is to connect every building on campus with LAN cables.
