Artistic Paper Making on Campus
"Paper Making" is a new course introduced this academic year by Richard Burnip, who has been teaching at Bilkent for the last seven years. Paper making, as an art, is a process whereby artists utilize recycled paper to make aesthetically pleasing objects, such as postcards or books. Mr. Burnip says he is the first one in Turkey to give lectures on paper making in the context of an art course. Students have the chance to learn a variety of techniques in this field, including traditional book making and bookbinding. Recently, the students in the course gave an exhibition of their work in the library. Other upcoming projects involve casting paper with molds or preparing wall reliefs.

Richard Burnip states that this course is an experiment for him as well as for the students. Sculpture is a wide-open field and from an experimental point of view, the curriculum might change from year to year. One other flexible aspect of the course is that students are free in their choice of when to work on a project. The outcomes are very subjective-they are reflections of the students" ideas. Therefore, grading them has to follow a preset critique.

Burnip briefly explains his method of critique as follows: he lets the students state their judgements before he states his own. At the end, they together discuss whether the project has attained the set objectives. Since the class size is small, close interaction between students and teacher is possible. This course is available to students of all departments next September. If you are interested in "Paper Making", you can visit a lesson on Thursday afternoons between 1:40 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at FADA.
