Capture Life Through a Camera Lens
Through photography, we keep the past alive one instant at a time. In our hands are preserved images of beauty, pain, laughter, and all the other things that make life worth living. The word photography is derived from the Greek words for "light" and "writing". Since the first primitive photos taken in 1839, photography has been evolving side by side with technology, as is evident today in the use of advanced computer techniques to enhance images, for example.

Bilkent offers students many opportunities to enter or delve deeper into the world of photography. The Department of Graphic Design offers "Photographic Practice," a course open to all students. Ißİk Aksoy, the course instructor, explains that the technique of photography can be learned only through practice and adds, "In this course, students not only get to know their cameras intimately, they also learn dark room applications and practice photography with texture, pattern, and translucence in mind. I teach technique here and if one has the spirit, much of practical value can be gained by the student."

Another option for learning photography at Bilkent is the Photography Club. In addition to running photography courses for all newcomers, the club also organizes trips to interesting places in Turkey for the purpose of putting theory into practice. Members later meet to discuss and evaluate their photographs. For further information about the club, call Berivan Oruçoğlu at (532) 241-1942, or e-mail photography_club@hotmail.com.
