Children Gaze on New Horizons Through TEGV/Bilkent Cooperation
|
When the university hosted forty children visiting Ankara for the Children's Day celebrations from April 21-24, over 20 volunteer Bilkent students took on the role of big brothers and big sisters during the visit. The children-specially selected by TEGV (Türkiye Eğitim Gönüllüleri Vakfı) on the basis that they had never been to Ankara before-were treated to a schedule full of novelty and fun in the company of their new university friends.
One of the volunteers, Hüsnü Ada (IR/III) says, "Some of these children might never be able to see Ankara again, so our duty was to do our best to show them new horizons. I think we achieved that aim, although I think most of the children now feel as if they have woken up from a dream. But the feeling will soon pass and they will remember fondly the good times they spent here."
The leave-taking on Monday was an emotional one on both sides, and some of the children even phoned their "big sisters and brothers"upon arriving back home. Coordinated by the Office of the Dean of Students, the event is sure to leave lasting impressions of fun and friendship in the memory of the children for a long time to come.
