Meet New Bilkenters!
This week, Bilkent News spoke to Feyza Barutçu, a second year International Relations student, who joined Bilkent from Belgium.

Feyza was born in Ankara and lived here till she was eight. Because of her father's position in the military, the family moved to Istanbul, then to Kars, Sarıkamış, ("Sarıkamış was a great place to do skiing," she says) and to İzmir. From İzmir Bornova Anatolian High School, she found herself in an American high school in Belgium, where her studies were in English and in French.

Feyza worked hard and finished the four year High School in two years but that did not stop her from joining the volleyball and soccer teams. "Life at school was a lot of fun," she says, "Once, the girls played American football, and the boys became cheer leaders." She was awarded with an honors scholarship given to students who are successful in both academic and social life. She says, "when I was awarded the scholarship, I knew I was also representing Turkey."

While she was at Grade 12, she took university courses from the Belgium campus of University of Maryland, and later continued her studies in business at the same university. Feyza kept her marks quite high at the university as well.

When it was time to come back to Turkey with her family, she was quite happy that she could continue her studies at Bilkent University. "Coming back to Turkey, the first thing I learned as a pedestrian was to stop for the cars on the streets, but at Bilkent, the drivers stop for you!"

Feyza Barutçu wants to be an ambassador in a foreign country in the future. Why? She says, "Because I like representing my country, enjoy politics, have a multicultural view and also I am fluent in English and French. Besides, I love travelling!"
