Discovering the Heart and Soul of Bilkent University
A Treasure: Bilkent's Library
Some of the best memories of university life are forged at the library: studying, discovering new ideas, and meeting friends are all part of the library experience. Here at Bilkent University students, faculty and staff have access to one of Turkey's best academic libraries, providing access to over 312,000 books with new titles added to the shelves regularly. The collection is located at two sites, at the Main Library in the center of main campus, and at the East Campus Library.

The library contains more than just books. Readers can take advantage of a variety of non-book resources as well, including access to a selection of electronic databases, on-line journals as well as printed ones, viewing stations for the library's collection of films, and listening stations for the library's music collection.

Electronic resources are available via the library's web-site. Covering a variety of subject areas, electronic databases provide access to journal citations, full text articles and abstracts, and statistical information.

Many of the journals cited in the databases can be found in the Periodicals Room in the Main Library. With a collection of over 3000 current print titles, the periodicals collection covers a broad range of subjects, covering topics as diverse as WomenÕs Studies, Urban Planning, Sports, Computer Science, Business and Economics, and Health, to name just a few. Most periodicals are in English, but there are also titles in Turkish, German, Russian and Spanish. A number of journals can also be found on-line, as part of the library's growing collection of electronic journals.

The Main Library also includes special collections that are unique to Bilkent University. The Archive of Turkish Plastic Arts, a collection housed in the Art Library, documents the professional activity of Turkish artists. The Main Library is also the home of the Halil İnalcık Collection, a renowned collection of books, many of them rare, on Ottoman History. The library is a resource for many outside the Bilkent community as well. In 1999 the library received 51,832 visitors from outside the Bilkent community, and in the first nine months of 2000 another 44,581 scholars and researchers visited and used the Bilkent University Library. Besides visitors from all over Turkey, including academics and students, the library hosted many prospective students as well as visitors from 155 foreign universities.

The library is open every day of the year, except New Years Day and on the first day of the two major Bayram Holidays. The Main Library is open daily from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. The East Campus Library is open Sunday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and Friday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
You can find out more about the library by paying a visit, and by checking out the library's web-site at: http://www.library.bilkent.edu.tr
