Two Bilkent Professors Invited to Join TÜBA
|
On December 1, two professors from Bilkent University were inducted as full members of the General Assembly of the Turkish Academy of Sciences.
It is interesting to compare the careers of Professors Haldun Özaktaş and Ekmel Özbay through the years. Both graduated from METU and Stanford University, earning their B.S. and Ph. D. degrees. Both joined the Bilkent University Electrical and Electronics Engineering (1991) and Physics (1994) Departments, respectively. Prof. Özaktaş is renowned for his theoretical contributions to optics and to signal processing in general. Prof. Özbay, an experimental scientist, is well known for his ground-breaking work on photodetectors and photonic band-gap materials. They are among the youngest elected members of the Academy.
The Turkish Academy of Sciences, established in 1993, confers awards on accomplished scientists for their creative work through full memberships, associate memberships, and honorary memberships. The Academy presently has 119 members however, the total number of its members cannot at anytime exceed 2 % of the total number of university professors in Turkey.
