As Director General of UNESCO, Mr. Matsuura has focused on the elimination of extreme poverty, and the increase in the use of information/ communication technologies for the development of education, science and culture, along with the formation of a world-wide information society. In the field of education, he is firmly committed to improving early childhood education and care as well as improving education for all young people and adults, as stated in the Dakar Framework for Action, agreed upon in the World Education Forum held in April 2000.
The ceremony took place in the University Concert Hall and was attended by a large group of the Bilkent community. The program included a mini-concert performed by the Bilkent Symphony orchestra, and the conferring of the Honorary Doctorate along with an address by the Director General of UNESCO himself. In addressing the audience, Mr. Matsuura said Bilkent University’s ambitions can be judged by its success. Prof. İhsan Doğramacı can now enjoy watching his dreams come true.
