Prof. Doğramacı awards Mr. Koichiro Matsuura with Honorary Degree

On Thursday, February 14, Bilkent University conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities and Letters on Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, the Director General of UNESCO. Mr. Matsuura has had a long and distinguished diplomatic career beginning in 1959 in the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1977 he served as Counselor of the Embassy of Japan in the United States, in 1985-88 as Consul General in Hong Kong, in 1992-94 as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Sherpa for Japan at the G-7 Summit, and from 1998-99 as Chairperson to the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO. On November 12, 1999, he was elected Director-General of UNESCO by the Organization's General Conference to serve a six-year term.

Bilkent Faculty Wins TORC Winter Trophy

Professor Mustafa Pultar has won the 2001 Winter Trophy of the Turkish Offshore Racing Club (TORC) in the freshman class. The trophy was awarded for the best overall standing in three races, sailed on the Marmara sea on November 17, December 1 and 22. The first two were sailed under near gale forced winds and rain, while the third was run in near calm and fog. Pultar sails on his yacht ÇİLİNGÖZ, a Van De Stadt 34, with a family team of seven close relatives. He says that in 2002 they will be aiming for the TORC Trophy in the racer/cruiser class. It’s a Shame I Quit Smoking

It's a widely known fact that smoking has many disadvantages. Not only is it harmful to our health, but to our social well-being. Last year Prof. Abdullah Atalar initiated a new campaign, and smoking in the cafeterias and the buildings was totally prohibited. This campaign attracted a lot of attention and even drew some complaints, but now we appreciate the smoke-free environment.
