It’s a Shame I Quit Smoking
In fact, it was fifteen years ago when in 1987, Prof. Abdullah Atalar first initiated a campaign against smoking. At that time, Prof. Erol Arkun, from the Department of Computer Engineering, was not sure if he wanted to quit or if he could. He remembers a certain day in 1987:
"I had been working on a problem for a long time. You know sometimes when you try solving a problem you just get lost, you don’t realize the things happening around you. It was one of those moments under harsh stress, when a few minutes later I realized I had a cigarette in my hand and another newly lit one in the ashtray. It was obvious that I was not enjoying two cigarettes at one time, cigarettes were my only door when I wanted to escape. So I decided to quit smoking on the 1st of January, 1988. It’s a shame I quit smoking that day. I wish I had done so much earlier."
