Letter to the Editor... Letter to the Editor...

Dear Editor,
When I read his article, I couldn't help feeling highly envious of Prof. Arkun, as he described the way he quit smoking, encouraged by Bilkent's policy of banning smoking in cafeterias and other public areas. I congratulate Prof. Arkun on his success, since I know that this is a decision which takes courage and great will of mind. However, I think people who, like myself, have quit smoking despite having to eat at the East Campus Cafeteria, deserve even more applause. The whole of the student Table d'Hote section of our cafeteria is declared a "Smoking Zone". This is advertised with notices at the entrance and on the walls. Not only do students who wish to have their lunch at the Table d'Hote section (whether they are smokers or not) have to put up with the smoke that accumulates due to improper ventilation, but also, due to a recent problem with a door "closed upon the director's orders due to noise", all people are now forced through this zone in order to get to some other part of the cafeteria where they can breathe while they eat.
Although the web pages say so, I find it hard to decide whether Bilkent is a ‘No Smoking’ university or not. Has Bilkent changed its policy about banning smoking in indoor public areas?

Dear Bilkent News;
In Volume 8, Number 14 of the Bilkent News, I read the following article entitled “Radio Bilkent Mutes”. As far as I know, Radio Bilkent was muted by RTÜK because of their illegal frequency, but your article seems like an advertisement for the reinstatement of Radio Bilkent. I’m worried about your journalism ethics. Is the “fact” that you alluded to in the article actually a fact? Hopefully you are not aware of this situation. I just want to inform you that radio broadcasting is forbidden for Radio Bilkent.

Etkin Çiftçi (COMD/III)
Ex-member of Radio Bilkent

Response to the letter:
The article concerning Radio Bilkent in the February 12th issue of the Bilkent News was totally correct. Radio Bilkent is at this time applying for a license to broadcast on the FM airwaves and awaiting the completion of the licensing process. Below is the article which appeared in Bilkent News:
“Radio Bilkent’s station at FM 106.7 and its internet broadcasting services have been off the air since the beginning of January 2002, due to the fact that the station has been applying for a more powerful frequency by which a broader audience and area will be reached. Once a new frequency is obtained Radio Bilkent will be on the air once again. Until then, keep a song in your hearts!”.
