Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen (Metamorphoses, 1945) was composed some of the most dire day of World War II. Strauss wrote a serene, for 23 solo strings in one long slow movement.
Der Rosankavalier (The Knight of the Rose, 1910) is no less rich in inner detail, but it seeks to evocate tenderness, nostalgia and humour, helped along by sentimental Viennese waltzes. It is a sunny, romantic comedy set in Maria Theresa’s Vienna and is animated, endearing music.
Claude Debussy’s ballet score Jeux (Games, 1913) is more popular as a concert piece than in its original form as a “Danced Poem”. Jeux contains some of Debussy's strangest harmony and textures. Warm yet ironic, Jeux seems to touch upon carnal themes without ever losing its tone of innocence.
