Bilkent University Traffic Committee Striving for a Safer Campus

Bilkent University Traffic Committee was the first such committee to be established in Turkey. Seven years ago, a team of faculty, staff and students from different departments with a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds were chosen to improve the traffic situation on campus, and to encourage all Bilkenters to be courteous and conscientious drivers. This year theTraffic Committee consists of the following members: Asst. Prof. Levent Akdeniz (Dept. of Business Administration), Ramiz Akgün (Head of Construction and Maintenance), Yüksel Bural (Head of Security Office), Sinan Çam (Head of Support Services and Director of Transportation Services), Asst. Prof. Ugur Doğrusöz (Dept. of Computer Engineering), Nermin Fenmen (Chair, Dept. of Computer Aided Accounting), Çiçek Belkıs Neftçi (Student, Dept. of Communication and Design), Güliz Doğan (Dept. of Business Information Management), Oğuz Özbilgin (Assistant Secretary General), Assoc. Prof. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu (Department of Industrial Engineering and Head of Traffic Committee), and Prof. Erinç Yeldan (Chair, Dept. of Economics).
Currently, the Traffic Committee, in cooperation with the Computer Center, is establishing a computerized traffic system, and revising the database concerning vehicles on campus. Drivers will soon be issued smart-cards, which will not only serve as a key to automatic barriers for parking lots, but will also serve as a link to keeping track of drivers violating campus traffic rules.
As of this new academic year, a Violation Points System has been put into effect, where drivers violating traffic rules on campus (in some cases, even outside campus) will be penalized according to the extent of the situation. These rules will be available on the Traffic Committee website (www.trafik.bilkent.edu.tr), and will be published in the coming issues of Bilkent News. E-mail at trafik@bilkent.edu.tr, for any suggestions you may have in helping to make the roads safer.
