Ambassadors Discuss Possible EU Membership For Turkey

Bilkent Diplomasi Kulübü organized a conference entitled “European Union, Turkey and the Future of EU” held on Tuesday, March 19, 2002. The panelists were Christian Hoppe (Ambassador of Denmark) and Ioannis Corantis (Ambassador of Greece). In addition, a representative for Manuel De La Camara (Ambassador of Spain) delivered a speech. The panel was presided over by Prof. Dr. Ali Karaosmanoðlu.
Mr. Corantis discussed the Greek experience of EU candidacy and membership; initially many Greeks and various institutions objected to Greece becoming a member. The second speaker was Mr. Hoppe, who pointed out that the main purpose of the EU initially was to prevent another war on the European continent. Mr. Hoppe commented on the debate over whether or not Turkey is a European country. According to Mr. Hoppe, Turkey indeed has been part of Europe since the beginning of the Ottoman Empire. Mr. Hoppe remarked: “Turkey is not completely in Europe; it also has land in Asia. However, Denmark is not completely in Europe either; we also have land in North America.” Lastly, Mr. De La Camara’s speech argued that despite mutual disappointments in the past, both sides would benefit from Turkey’s membership in the EU. Finally, all guests agreed that although no specific date can be given for accession, the reform process in Turkey is significant and greatly appreciated by the Union.
