Fossil Hunting
|
Biology education students from the Graduate School of Education spent a day digging through the chalky soil for fossils at Kızılcahamam. They found fish skeletons, pine needles, snails, many different kinds of leaves, as well as living animals such as a scorpion woken from its winter sleep. A biology student’s comment on that day was, "We are going back in time, and supporting theory with practice".
After Kızılcahamam, the group went on to Çeltikçi, and found wood which had been petrified 18 millions years ago. Tree trunks, branches, roots, all made of stone, were there for inspection by the curious master’s students.
Anyone interested in such fossils should visit the MTA museum on the Eskişehir road, where there is a fine collection, together with fossils from the big mammals which used to live in Ankara.
