Bilkent Faculty Proves Excellence
Recently, three academicians from Bilkent University received the TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey) Awards 2002. Dr. Orhan Arıkan (EE), Dr. Ahmet Oral (PHYS) and Dr. Özgür Ulusoy (CS) are the recipients of this year’s TÜBİTAK Young Scientist Awards.
After his graduation from the Electrical Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University, Dr. Orhan Arıkan continued his graduate studies at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Following the completion of his Ph.D. in 1990, he joined Schlumberger-Doll Research in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Dr. Arıkan joined the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of Bilkent University in 1993.
Dr. Ahmet Oral received his Ph.D. at Bilkent in 1994. After his post-doctoral research in England, he joined the Physics Department in 1999. His research interests include Nanotechnology, Atomic Manipulation, Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Hall Probe Microscopy and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. Dr. Oral has been cited for his outstanding work on scanning Probe Microscopy.
Dr. Özgür Ulusoy received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1992. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Computer Engineering Department of Bilkent University. His research interests include wireless data access, data management for mobile systems, web query languages and data models, multimedia database systems, and real-time and active database systems.

Congratulations Bilkent’s 12 Giant Men!
The Bilkent Men’s Basketball Team is now in the First League! Bilkent’s 12 Giant Men attended the 2nd League Basketball Group Championship, which took place in Ankara between December 17 and 21. After very competitive matches, our team advanced their ranking to the 1st League by winning first place in the tournament.
Head Coach Kağan Eynak says that despite a number of injuries, our players displayed a consistently high level of performance during a series of matches played over the course of five successive days.
Coached by Kağan Eynak, Fatih Coşkun, Kuntay Velioğlu and Ertun Bozkurt (Assistant coaches), the Men’s Basketball team includes Onat Özüak, Özgür Önol, Doruk Örs, Can Soylu, Murat Sağlam, Sebahattin Bilgen, Emre Can Doğruyol, İlker Dögel, Batuhan Çelik, Meriç Osman, Osman Sezener and Ömer Çalık.
Congratulations to our basketball team. We wish them success in the 1st League and we hope our audience - the 13th member of the Giant Men - will be there to cheer the other 12!
Melih Cevdet Anday Symposium Held on Campus
Monday, December 23 a symposium was held at Bilkent’s Center for Turkish Literature on the poetry of Melih Cevdet Anday, one of Turkey’s great modern poets.
The symposium included an Anday poetry and music program at the FEASS
C-Block Auditorium. The new Minister of Culture, Assoc. Prof. Hüseyin Çelik and his
newly appointed undersecretary Prof. Mustafa İsen, as well as the head of the trustees of Bilkent University Foundation Prof. İhsan Doğramacı, were all present.
In his opening speech, Prof. Ali Doğramacı, Rector of the University, announced the establishment of a new scholarship in honor of Melih Cevdet Anday. The Melih Cevdet Anday Scholarship will be given each year to a successful student.
The principal speakers at the symposium were Doğan Hızlan, Dr. Mustafa Şerif Onaran and Zülfü Livaneli. There was also a musical performance by singer and guitarist Ömer Özgeç, who presented a number of songs based on Anday poems.
On Tuesday, December 24, the academic portion of the symposium was presented. Papers by nine academics, including three graduate students, Alphan Akgül, Şehnaz Şişmanoğlu and Yalçın Armağan, were featured.
After a few welcoming words by Vice-Rector Prof. Erol Arkun, Hilmi Yavuz gave a brief opening speech followed by papers by Prof. Mehmet Yalçın, Ahmet Oktay, Dr. Füsun Akatlı, Mehmet H. Doğan, Prof. Tahsin Yücel, and Prof. Ahmet İnam.
