Letter to the Editor...

Dear Editor,
I would like to bring to the attention of the Editorial Board, a problem concerning one of the PC labs in the FADA building. By saying the FADA building, I am talking about the white one with the big columns. On the second floor, there is a PC lab which is not available for use by the general student population.
The PC lab I am talking about is the one which was restored prior to the beginning of the first semester of 2002 and which we, COMD students, go to, to renew our registration and add/drop courses at the beginning of each year. All of my courses are in this building and I find it interesting that students are not allowed to use these computers. Actually, when we need to get onto the internet, we can either use the PCs in FF216 or in FF216, where however, there is no printer, whereas the lab I mentioned above is the only one with a printer in the entire building.
Because we are university students, we are required to write numerous essays and I don’t understand why I have to go to the BCC to get the print- out of my essay if there is a printer in my own faculty building. I understand that at times there are classes scheduled in that lab, but there are probably also times that it is completely free. At the beginning of this year, I went there to check on the SRS to find the classroom number of one of my courses. In the lab, there were only 2-3 students and a teacher, who informed me that only people taking a special course could use these computers. I said that I only needed it to learn which classroom I had to go to for my course and she told me to talk with the person responsible for the lab. So I went to this individual and told him that it would take me about 10 seconds to get the information I required.
Finally after a struggle (!), I got permission to use one of the computers for two minutes. In conclusion, I would be grateful if someone could tell me why we are not allowed to use this lab and why we always have to go to the BCC to get print-outs.

Yavuz Tümer (COMD/II)

Response to the Letter:
Dear Tümer,
The BCC labs at the FADA Building were planned and built to be used only for courses which need to be delivered in a laboratory environment. These labs are not maintained as open/free labs and are open only during class times. We suggest that you use the BCC labs in the B Building which serve the Bilkent community around the clock. Thank you.

Can Uğur Ayfer,
Asst. Director, BCC
