Film Review: “Frida”

“Never before had a woman put such agonized poetry on canvas as Frida did.” said Diego Rivera, speaking about his beloved wife Frida Kahlo, whose life - along with many of the paintings she made during her life - is depicted in the movie called “Frida”. Awarded best makeup and best music score by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the Oscars, Frida is a true cinematographic and narrative success. The real life story this revolutionary Mexican painter -revolutionary in terms of her political affiliation, artistic style, and bisexuality - is part of what has made the movie fascinating for audiences. Kahlo’s life was full of not only physical but also emotional pains, and was the real stimulus for her surrealist paintings, and especially her self-portraits. Besides her creative talent, Kahlo’s political ideology attracted the communist muralist Diego Rivera, with whom she was twice married. Selma Hayek’s bears a striking resemblance to the artist; her performance in this movie has been widely appreciated; the cast as a whole is a extraordinary one, with supporting roles played by Ashley Judd, Antonio Banderas, Edward Norton, and Geoffrey Rush.
If you think you would enjoy the visual delights of an artistic exhibition, the sounds of Latin music, and a vivid picture of the life and works of an iconic painter, Frida is a good choice for you!
