National Sovereignty and Children’s Day

When the first Turkish National Assembly opened on April 23, 1920, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk declared that day a national day for children in order to emphasize that they represented the future of the new nation. Now recognized internationally, the holiday is a gift to children - the grownups of tomorrow - and a way of recognizing that the future of the Republic lies in their hands.
We hope all the children enjoy the National Sovereignty and Children's Day holiday. And don't forget, there are no classes Wednesday.

Organic Paradise for Those with Green Thumbs

The Organic Paradise Project, begun last year, offers all Bilkenters the opportunity to produce their own organically grown vegetables and flowers right here on campus. The project continues this year thanks to the overwhelming response of the public last year. The land designated for this project is in the valley between Main Campus and the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, including the area right above the Bilkent Greenhouses. 20 m2 leases run from May through September 30 for $50.
The program is open to all members of the university including faculty, staff, and students. Through this project, individuals can plant vegetables, flowers, or a combination of the two. All plants are grown with organic materials and no artificial fertilizers are allowed. Members are required to work on their own plots without any hired help, water will be provided free of charge, and gardening courses will be offered by the program coordinator and the manager of the Environmental Planning Department, Füsun Tamer.
For more information call the Environmental Planning Management at ext. 2257-2258. There are only 150 plots, and they are available on a first come first served basis, so we recommend that you get there early. Happy Gardening!

He holds a B.A. degree from Dartmouth and a Ph.D. in European History from UCLA. He is the current Head of the American International School in Genoa, Italy.

Bilkent Judges Steamroll Başkent Knights

On an overcast Saturday afternoon, April 20th at 1:30 p.m., the Bilkent Judges met the Başkent Knights on the Main Campus Football field. The Judges walked away with an astounding win, with the final score being the Judges 104 and the Knights 6. The MVPs of the game were: #30 Onur Gökahmetoglu, #31 Fuat Köseoğlu, #83 Can Koruyan, and #77 Burak Alıcı. A lot of credit must also be given to the Judge’s Defense which never allowed the Knights to develop a sustainable offensive attack. Remember all you football fans, the next game will be against the Ankara Cats on April 25 at 1:30 p.m., on the Main Campus Football field.
If the Judge’s win this one, it’s off to the semi-finals! Go Judges!
