Welcome, or welcome back, from the University Library to all Bilkenters for the academic year 2015-16! Bilkent librarians have already met most of the new students as part of this year’s GE100 orientation. Around 1,940 domestic students attended the special library sessions held at the Faculty of Music building and learned about the Library’s resources and services. Many have already also borrowed their first book from the Library, earning an extra point for GE 100. In addition, the Library held GE 100 meetings about information literacy and lifelong learning, and also introductory presentations for incoming international and exchange students. We hope these sessions were both informative and enjoyable for all participants.
As usual, Bilkent Library will be hosting various cultural and social events during the semester, in addition to maintaining its regular intellectual and information services. These will include lectures, exhibitions, musical performances and student competitions. The details of this semester’s Lunchtime Lecture Series are already available. The series will kick off on Wednesday, October 21, with a talk by Prof. Erinç Yeldan (ECON) entitled “Pictures from an Economist’s Exhibition: Reflections on the Global and Turkish Economy.” Our second lecture will be presented by a group—Armağan Ateşkan (EDUC), Sıla Sagun (BLIS) and Prof. Margaret Sands (EDUC)—and will describe a study of the value of the IB diploma for preparation for university life. It will take place on Thursday, November 19. The third talk will be delivered by Dr. Hüseyin Boyacı of the Department of Psychology and is scheduled for Wednesday, December 16. Please mark your calendars for all these dates, and watch for further announcements through BAIS and social media concerning these and other events at the Library.
We wish all members of the Bilkent community a pleasant and productive fall semester, and look forward to seeing you all in the Library in the coming weeks.
