This year’s Republic Run was held on Saturday, October 24, and despite the chilly weather, the event was a success. One hundred forty runners competed in seven age categories; all made it to the finish line.
There was only one competitor in the 70 and over age category. The presence of sophomores among the runners was especially noticeable, perhaps due in part to the 40 points awarded for participation in the race to students taking the GE 250/251 courses.
Runners in the youngest age category started in front of the Music Building; those in all other age groups started in front of the East Campus Sports Hall. The end point for all runners was the Main Sports Center. The final destination was apparently misunderstood by some participants, who ran in the direction of the Dormitory Sports Center instead.
One of the finishers, Dias Alymbekov (CS/II), expressed his feelings after the race: “I liked it a lot; finishing felt very satisfying. Now I am motivated to train seriously for the next race.” Dias also shared a comical incident that happened during the race, reflecting how dominant the eventual winner in the men’s category was: “A friend of mine finished fourth, and he told me that during the race he thought that he was in third because the actual race leader was completely out of his sight.”
