Polat Göktaş, a PhD candidate in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Ayhan Altıntaş, has been awarded an IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) doctoral research grant for the 2017-2018 academic year. The $2,500 award will support his research project, “Analysis and Experimental Study of Electromagnetic Scattering by Single Biological Cells During Different Phases of Mitosis.”
Measurement setups and preparation of cell line samples for the project have been conducted at the National Nanotechnology Research Center (UNAM) at Bilkent University and the Stem Cell Research and Application Center at Hacettepe University. The project will be pursued in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent and in the Bio-Optics Laboratory of the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Medical School under the auspices of the Fulbright Visiting PhD Research Scholar program.
The IEEE AP-S awards up to six $1,000 predoctoral scholarships and up to ten $2,500 PhD fellowships each year to encourage students to pursue a career in the area of electromagnetics.
