Eight Bilkent faculty members and eight of the university’s graduates were among the individuals receiving this year’s Outstanding Young Scientist Awards from the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA). The awards were presented at a ceremony held on December 12 at the presidential palace.
The Bilkent faculty awardees are Asst. Prof. Hüseyin Can Aksoy (Faculty of Law), Asst. Prof. Bilge Baytekin (Department of Chemistry and UNAM), Asst. Prof. Barbaros Çetin (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Asst. Prof. Ercüment Çiçek (Department of Computer Engineering), Asst. Prof. Onur Çizmecioğlu (Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and UNAM), Asst. Prof. Selim Hanay (Department of Mechanical Engineering and UNAM), Asst. Prof. Ferdi Karadaş (Department of Chemistry and UNAM) and Asst. Prof. Yıldıray Yıldız (Department of Mechanical Engineering).
The award recipients also include Bilkent graduates Assoc. Prof. Tuba Işınsu İsen Durmuş (EDEB MA ’02, PhD ’07), Asst. Prof. Alptekin Küpçü (CS ’04), Asst. Prof. Gülistan Meşe Özçivici (MBG ’02), Asst. Prof. Evren Mutlugün (PHYS MA ’07, PhD ’12), Asst. Prof. Yavuz Oktay (MBG ’01), Assoc. Prof. Hasan Şahin (MSN PhD ’12), Asst. Prof. Şerif Şentürk (MBG PhD ’10), and Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Emre Taşgın (PHYS ’03, PhD ’09).
Bilkent faculty and graduates thus constitute 16 of the 39 recipients this year.
TÜBA introduced the Program to Award Young Scientists (GEBİP) in 2001 to recognize and support outstanding young researchers working in the natural and social sciences, engineering and medicine.
