Students and faculty members from the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design have numbered among the participants in the fourth İstanbul Design Biennial. Organized by the İstanbul Foundation for Arts and Culture (İKSV), the biennial opened on September 22 and will run through November 4.
Themed as “A School of Schools,” the 2018 biennial is focusing on “the multiple dimensions of design as learning”; among its events are six “Academy Days” featuring pop-up schools at different venues in the city. The IAED presentation was part of the fifth Academy Day, which took place at the Akbank Sanat cultural center in Beyoğlu on October 23 and included contributions from several universities.
The Bilkent segment began with opening remarks by instructor Serpil Altay, who outlined the scope and objectives of the IAED 415 Advanced Detailing Studio course and described the content of the term project assigned during the 2017–18 summer term. Under the title “Pop-Up Space,” six projects by students working as individuals or in two-person teams were presented to the audience in detail by their creators, Gökçe Ç. Özdemir, Elif N. Bora/ Selcen Eyüboğlu, Evrim Karacan, Eylül Dirican, Seren Sezer and Burak Babaoğlu/Talha H. Türkcan. A slide show accompanied the presentations.
Ms. Altay and another IAED instructor, Dr. Elif Erdemir Türkkan, organized and guided Bilkent’s participation in the biennial, with the assistance of graduate students İrem Yumuşak, Gizem Yenel, Volkan Acun and Dilara Beder.
