Last week, on October 25–27, Bilkent University hosted the inaugural Swip-Tr conference, organized by the Society for Women in Philosophy in Turkey (Swip-TR) with support from a Hypatia Diversity Grant and Bilkent’s Department of Philosophy. The goal of the event was to create a forum where women in philosophy could meet and help each other.
The three-day conference provided women philosophers studying or working in Turkey as well as women from Turkey who study or work in philosophy abroad with the opportunity to share their ideas and learn about each other’s work. Prof. Zeynep Direk (Koç University), Prof. Hatice Nur Erkizan (Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University), Prof. Hülya Şimga (Maltepe University) and Asst. Prof. Şerife Tekin (University of Texas, San Antonio) gave keynote speeches.
Throughout the conference, women philosophers from universities all around Turkey presented their latest philosophical work, which led to lively and stimulating discussions. The conference consisted of panels in Turkish and English on various philosophical fields, such as philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of science, political philosophy, history of philosophy and feminist philosophy.
