Volunteers from Günköy (The Sun Rises From the Village), a project of the student volunteer organization TDP, recently spent a weekend working in the village of Eskil, in the province of Aksaray. Günköy has been active since 2010 in helping villages where school facilities are inadequate, visiting at least four schools in different villages every year.
One team of volunteers spent the whole weekend remodeling space in the school to serve as a library, which they stocked with two thousand donated books. While they worked on the library, other volunteers spent quality time with the schoolchildren, organizing fun activities like theater, sports, music, paper marbling and dancing, as well as planting flowers.
The volunteers hope that through their work and their example, they will help expand village children’s horizons and inspire them to dream.
Having completed their work in Eskil, Günköy volunteers have started collecting donations for their upcoming projects. For the rest of this week and next Monday (December 3-6 and 9), they will have stands set up in front of A and N Buildings, where those who wish to help can drop off contributions of books, school supplies and toys.
