BILNET
As of October 25, the Bilkent Computer Center (BCC) has activated a new system,
Bilnet, to be used in conjunction with Dormnet, the internet connection in the
dormitories. To learn more about the new system, Bilkent News
interviewed Can Ušur Ayfer, the BCC Assistant Director. He stated that the main purpose
of the Bilnet system is finding, identifying and banning users who exploit Dormnet,
disturb other Dormnet users or leave their computers open to worms and viruses. The Bilnet
program checks users' MAC and IP addresses as well as their individual user IDs and
passwords before allowing access to Dormnet. Whenever an attempt is made to connect to
Dormnet, the system compares the machine and the user profile with the pre-submitted
information. Thus, the new system makes everyone fully responsible for him/herself. The
Bilnet system is also capable of disconnecting users from Dormnet, and even of rebooting
their machines in case of emergency.
The internet is essential in both the academic and daily lives of all Bilkenters, and the
new system is a way of keeping it stable and continuously available for responsible
Dormnet users. Assistant Director Ayfer states: "We understand youth and its
necessities. Our aim is not to make students' lives harder. We just want to control
high-speed non-academic downloading and uploading, and to put an end to MAC or IP
cheating."
