Another Spring Fest Story
When the sun is brightly shining, when trees are colorful and when we have only a little
time left to have fun before finals, there is nothing better that can happen to us, than
being at Spring Fest. Different from many other people, being that this is my last Spring
Fest and I only have three weeks left in university, I was driven to have fun and see old
friends.
I should add that, yes I am one of the people who hates the idea of paying for the
concerts. Yes, I am the one who wants to see some more alternative singers or groups at a
university festival and the one who hated the idea of having the concerts at the Odeon.
Since Serdar Ortaç is a singer that I cannot bear to listen to; since Funda Arar is just
a singer who has a good voice and Hüsnü Şenlendirici is just a person who plays cover
music, there was no potential for me to jump and sing loudly. Instead, at night I was on
the grass of the Odeon, having fun with my friends, ignoring the concerts. It was a way
for me to protest the concerts only aimed at a certain audience that we were required to
pay money for even at our own school. But, it was not a problem since everybody who was
surprised and angry about the new concert scheme went in the end, to all the concerts by
paying. Half of the school was on the grass, alternatively talking and having fun, while
the others were in the Odeon. If the new concert scheme is sold, than it will keep going.
It is not a problem for me because it was my last Spring Fest.
During the festival, the concerts and song lists were not fun for me but there were some
fun activities for me. There was nothing better than watching and laughing at girls, who
tried to walk on the grass with high heel shoes! Watching people who tried to play with a
ball or Frisbee and the people who tried to avoid being hit was also fun. These were
enough fun and interesting enough for me to enjoy my last Spring Fest.
Another memorable thing was the officers walking around campus and trying to look for
alcohol in plastic bags and seeing the students' reactions to hide the alcohol. I guess it
is really hard to ban using alcohol at university festivals since there are many genius
people who know a million ways to hide the alcohol they are drinking. I saw many mixtures
with Freezer, Frappe and Coke. Speaking of the Freezer and Frappe, why don't we drink
those drinks all the time from Coffee Break or Mozart Café? They always sell those, but I
have not seen anyone drink them other than at Spring Fest. Frappe, Freezer, waffles and
many other things seem tastier at Spring Fest.
The last day was the best day, since it was Saturday and there were no lectures to go to.
Cheers for the people who brought the Funfair to our school. The Crazy Dance and Ranger
were the two popular rides of the festival this year. If I don't count that people had
pains in their necks the next day, they were really enjoyable. I hoped that the Funfair
could stay for all of May, so that we can use the rides during break times, to turn and be
upside down a little while; to think more clearly.
There were other good things. The Radio Bilkent party was the only time that I heard some
good music for people to go wild and I should also thank DOST for gathering people in a
circle and dancing around the whole grass field. There are many people who joined the
circle, and there were those who looked strangely at us. If it were not my last few weeks
at Bilkent, I would definitely join DOST, they are really fun people and doing a great
job. But it is too late for me to join a club.
Last but not least, even though I am angry that no alternative musicians were invited,
even though I hated that the night concert did not inspire any feelings in me to jump on
the grass, and scream and even though some people were angry that the concerts were not
free and then paid to go to the concerts; it was fun to see different people and tastes on
one campus, it was fun with the Freezers, the Funfair, the Radio Bilkent Party and being
with friends…
Farewell…
